In honor of the fifth centenary of his death, this seminar examines the art and life of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), one of the most fascinating and influential figures in European cultural history. Perhaps best known as a painter, Leonardo was also an architect, sculptor, inventor, civil engineer, anatomist, and student of humankind and nature. We will look at his multifaceted production within the context of the places where he worked (Florence, Milan, Rome, and France), and investigate his artistic, religious, political, economic, and personal motivations.
