Doctor, global humanitarian, anthropologist Paul Farmer visits the Honors College

The Honors College hosted global humanitarian Dr. Paul Farmer as part of Rutgers' 250th anniversary celebration on November 10, 2015.

Dr. Farmer had lunch with students and spoke about delivering healthcare to the world's poorest people in new and creative ways. His message, which students first learned about through their summer reading book by Dr. Farmer, To Repair the World, inspired them to leave their own ideas on our vision board for how they can help repair the world.

Deeply engaged with Dr. Farmer's message, three Honors College students, Meher Pandher, Shannon Cheung, and Harry Nicolaou, created a video to capture fellow students' reactions. You can read here their letter to Dr. Farmer and watch their video.

Dear Dr. Farmer,

This past December, you came to talk to the Rutgers Honors College about your work, your mission, and your compassion. We were so moved by your speech and your book, that we decided to create a video with clips of students who reflected on your visit. This video showcases not only your work but the discussions it provoked at the Honors College. Everyone realizes the world is not a perfect place, but at the Honors College we started to recognize our role in the repair process.

The students have started to collaborate locally with organizations and community service partners to further their understanding of what working with different kinds of people entails. The Honors College is working hard, with its Mission Course and newly founded Innovation Lab, to create an environment of curiosity, knowledge, and purpose. With our unique blend of students and extensive resources, we hope to be able to take your message and finally repair the world.

Thank you,

Shannon, Harry, and Meher
