Common Reading 

The Honors College Common Reading is a selection for all Honors College students that is used to foster a community-wide discussion focused on a contemporary social issue or theme that is deeply intertwined with social impact and inclusive excellence.


About the Speaker

Jake Bittle is a journalist based in Brooklyn who covers climate change and energy. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s Magazine, and a number of other publications. He is also a contributing writer for Grist. He is the author of the 2023 investigative monograph, The Great Displacement.


About the Event

All first-year students will attend a conversation between Mr. Bittle and Dr. Lisa Auermuller, the director of the Rutgers Marine Field Station in Tuckerton, NJ, who focuses on the impacts of climate change in coastal New Jersey.

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the President's Tent with all students engaging in the presentation and discussion, and then following up with small discussion sections where they will have a chance to further explore the questions and topics with their peers.
