Legacy Engineering Honors Academy Curriculum

PLEASE NOTE: The curriculum outlined on this page is for continuing Engineering Honors Academy students who entered prior to Fall 2025. If you would like to switch to a Curriculum for the Newly Integrated Honors Community, please review the New Curriculum page for details  as well as the "Legacy" Curriculum below.

Legacy Curriculum

Engineering Honors Academy students receive instruction at an advanced level in science, mathematics, and writing.

•    Honors Calculus l, ll, lll
•    Honors Physics and Physics Lab
•    Introduction to Data-driven Design for Engineering Applications I, II
•    Honors Engineering Design & Development l, ll
•    Honors Statics/Dynamics
•    Exposition and Argument

Honors students have several different course requirements in the first two years, particularly in math and science.

During the first year of the undergraduate program, students register for the Honors Calculus sequence, Honors Physics and Laboratory, Exposition and Argument, and Honors Introduction to Engineering. Students are expected to achieve a "B" or better in each of the Honors courses to continue their registration in the program.

During the second year, students will register for the second year courses in Honors Calculus, Honors Physics, and Honors Mechanics.

Honors Academy Mission Courses

These courses were developed to enhance the Engineering Honors Academy experience by providing hands-on course work that allows students to acquire and subsequently apply gained engineering knowledge. Students gain confidence and are empowered to succeed in their engineering education with passion, interest, and dedication.

Honors section of Introduction to Data-driven Design for Engineering Applications (ID3EA)

First-year Engineering Honors Academy scholars will enroll in honors sections of the Introduction to Data-driven Design for Engineering Applications (ID3EA) I course in the Fall and ID3EA II in the Spring. Each week, they will have a dedicated session to connect with the Honors Academy community. During this time, they will engage in problem-solving, critical thinking, and explore their personal and career goals. The course features presentations by upper-level students, alumni, School of Engineering faculty, and industry professionals, providing insights into engineering entry points.

2 credits (ID3EA I)

2 credits (ID3EA II)

Honors Engineering Design and Development

Second- and third-year students complete a semester-long project of their choosing applying classroom knowledge to hands-on projects that provide space for creative freedom. Students may take advantage of SoE support and resources, including professional mentors and lab facilities. Selected EHA seniors serve as design advisors, and work closely with the EHA director to create classroom lesson plans, plan, and grade assignments, organize events throughout the semester, and mentor student teams.

NEW Curriculum Selection

If you need or wish to switch to the NEW Honors College Curriculum, you must complete the form below no later than Sunday, February 01, 2026, 11:59 p.m. which is after the end of add/drop for the Spring 2026 semester.

Before making the decision to change curriculum, which is an irrevocable decision, you must first speak to your Advisor(s) or Assistant Deans in SOE. Please make sure that you understand the consequences of a switch and have a clear understanding of what new expectations or requirements will result from a switch.

You should also visit Degree Navigator to explore how the options will impact your current path. UseCODE: NBHC to load the new Honors College curriculum and assess your course work.

Note: If you do not complete the form, it is assumed that you will continue in your current Engineering Honors Academy Curriculum.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why am I now a part of the Honors College?

The integration of the Honors Programs, Honors Academy, and the Honors College was affected on 01 July 2025, after a year-long process. It was determined that having one, unified honors community would expand, strengthen, and enrich the opportunities for student success and coalesce the structures and administration of honors across campus in ways that are positive for all involved. As the Honors College already has an extensive structure--curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular, residential, social, and scholarships—it was decided that it would be most ideal to sustain it as the defining entity.

Am I required to do a Capstone as a "Legacy" SOE Honors Academy student?

Yes, to the extent that your declared major or field of study requires one for completion and graduation, you must still complete a Capstone (School-based or Departmental-based). Completing your Capstone will allow you to graduate from the Honors College as an Honors College Scholar with Distinction.

Has anything changed for continuing SOE Honors Academy students?

Yes, two things have changed, even if you do not change your curriculum. First there is an Honors College Common Reading open to and expected of all students which will be used as the text and foundation for several of our Academic Year programs, panels, and discussions. Second, the required GPA for "good standing" in the Honors College is set at a 3.25 for both a semester requirement and for a cumulative requirement.

Where do I go for help in understanding all the changes, potential changes, and to get answers about the Honors College moving forward?

As always, please reach out to your SOE-based Honors College Advisor(s) or Assistant Dean. To learn who these individuals are, please visit the Honors College Advising webpage. All academic, curricular, and service learning questions should be directed to these individuals. If you have questions about Honors College co-curricular, extra-curricular, residential, or social matters, please reach out to the Honors College Program Directors or Deans.
