School Based Requirements

Honors College students generally complete 21-40 credits of honors related work, including the Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, department based honors courses, Byrne Seminars, and the Capstone Project. These Honors College requirements fulfill general school-based requirements within the 120-128 credits necessary for graduation from the University.

School of Arts and Sciences 

School of Arts and Sciences students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of four 3- or 4-credit courses totaling 12 or more credits that are designated as honors courses, with a grade of C or better. At least one of the courses must be an Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar. The other 3 courses could include departmental honors offerings and interdisciplinary honors seminars. This requirement cannot be satisfied with honors research credits.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate level.
  • A Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the senior year.

Honors College students at SAS must maintain a semester grade-point average of at least 3.250 in each term of the first year, and at least a 3.500 in each term thereafter.

School of Environmental and Biological Sciences 

School of Environmental & Biological Sciences students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of two 3- or 4-credit Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, with a grade of C or better. It is highly recommended that one of these courses be a SEBS based Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar.
  • Honors coursework or tutorials must reach at least 21 credits of honors related work.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • A Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the senior year.
  • Honors College students in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences are required to complete a series of mentored research experiences in their sophomore (2 credits) junior (3 credits) and senior (6 credit Capstone Experience) years.

Honors College students at the School of Environmental & Biological Sciences are required to maintain at least a 3.25 term grade point average, and are required to earn at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average by the time of graduation.

School of Engineering

School of Engineering students at the Honors College must meet the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of one 3- or 4-credit Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, with a grade of B or better.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • A Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the senior year.
  • Honors College students at the School of Engineering are expected to maintain a minimum gpa of 3.25 and a grade of B or better in each of the Honors courses.

During the first year of the undergraduate program, students will register for the Honors Calculus sequence (640:151:H1, 152:H1, 251:H1), Honors Physics and Laboratory (750:271, 272, 273, 275, 276), Exposition and Argument (355:103), and the Engineering Orientation Lecture (440:100). It will be expected that students will achieve a "B" or better in each of the Honors courses to continue their registration in the program.

During the second year, students will register for the second year Honors Calculus course (640:251:H1) and Honors Physics (750:273), and Honors Mechanics (440:291). Students majoring in ME, Civil, ISE and BEE will also register for 292 .

Rutgers Business School

Rutgers Business School students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of four 3- or 4-credit courses totaling 12 or more credits that are designated as honors courses, with a grade of C or better. At least one of the courses must be an Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar. The other 3 courses could include departmental honors offerings and interdisciplinary honors seminars. This requirement cannot be satisfied with honors research credits.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate level. 
  • A Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the senior year. RBS students must complete an HC Capstone Proposal Form and a RBS Capstone/Senior Honors Project Form.

Honors College students at RBS must maintain a semester grade-point average of at least 3.250 in each term of the first year, and at least a 3.500 in each term thereafter.

Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy

Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy students at the Honors College must complete the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of one 3- or 4-credit Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, with a grade of C or better.
  • Completing other honors-related coursework adding to a minimum of 21 honors credits.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • A Pharmacy approved Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the third, fourth, or fifth year.
  • Honors College students at the School of Pharmacy are expected to maintain a semester grade-point average of at least 3.2.
  • All HC requirements, except for the capstone, should be completed by the end of the fourth year, and the capstone project should be formally approved and underway by that time. The HC Pharmacy Capstone Project must be completed by the end of the 5th year.

Mason Gross School of the Arts

Mason Gross School of the Arts students at the Honors College must complete the following requirements:

  • Completing the 3-credit Honors College Mission Course in the first year. This course meets a Mason Gross liberal arts requirement.
  • Taking one Byrne Seminar in the first year.
  • A minimum of one 3- or 4-credit Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, with a grade of C or better. The seminar course meets one Mason Gross liberal arts requirement.
  • Completing other honors-related coursework adding to a minimum of 21 honors credits.
  • Participating in at least 30 hours of Honors College approved service projects by the end of the junior year.
  • A Mason Gross related Capstone Experience of at least 6 credits, typically completed in the senior year.
  • Honors College students at the Mason Gross School of the Arts are expected to maintain a minimum gpa of 3.2.
