The years 1968-1971 changed the world, and so have the years 2018-2021. In honor of these two generations, the Class of 1970 is supporting an oral history project to record the experiences and legacies of Scarlet Knights “in a time of change,” and the experiences of young people today, fifty years later.

Generations of Change will launch in spring 2021 with a workshop/ infosessions to familiarize students with the Oral History Archives, speak with alumni, and plan general priorities for the fall semester seminar. The project will focus on comparative experiences, and ask which experiences are similar or different across 50 years:

The promises and challenges of a college education

National Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter

The Vietnam War and Afghanistan-Iraq conflicts

Earth Day then and Climate Change now

Women’s Rights and the Me Too Movement

Hopes for employment and security

Aspirations for a middle-class or professional life

Plans and concerns of each generation for the world and for its own children.

In fall 2021, students will sign up for a seminar and be trained as a research team in the fundamentals of oral history and public history, leading to interviews. Outcomes include a possible symposium and / or exhibition hosted by the Honors College, podcasts hosted by the HC and the Oral History Archives, publications including articles in journals and feature newsletters, and public school teacher outreach through the NJ Teachers History Workshop series.
