Program Overview
The Justice Health Summer Program is the first program of its kind in the country. Through the Honors College partnership with University Correctional Health Care and the Rutgers IDEA program, HC students have the opportunity to participate in an eight-week summer shadowing program to learn from with healthcare providers in the NJ Correctional System, including some on-site shadowing experiences, and implement a health education project.
The field of correctional medicine offers much value to undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare as it serves as a unique intersection of the many socioeconomic and cultural challenges facing our nation today. Many justice-involved individuals come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, struggle with substance use disorders, and may also suffer from a mental illness. The community health setting requires that physicians understand a variety of factors facing their demographic population. Some factors include government health insurance policies, substance abuse treatments, immigration status, gender identity, and health disparities.
