The Honors College Adviser/Advisee Relationship

Adviser Responsibilities

Your Honors College Academic Adviser will:

  1. Serve as your primary contact for information about Honors College policies/procedures as well as Honors College academic requirements and how these requirements can be incorporated into your major, minor, and/or general education programs.
  2. Have general knowledge of the school-specific majors, minors, and general education requirements, as well as school/university policies. Work in conjunction with school advisers to help you understand the academic policies, procedures, and programs of the school and university.
  3. Seek to understand your particular concerns affecting your academic progress. Help you understand the expected standards of achievement. Help you assess the likelihood of success in certain areas of study.
  4. Help you plan a course of study, give advice about courses and the adjustment of course loads, and discuss ways in which the Honors College requirements can intersect with school-based major, minor, and general education requirements.  
  5. Facilitate exploration of your educational and career objectives based on your demonstrated abilities and expressed interests. Help you understand the relationships among courses, academic programs, undergraduate research opportunities, internships, study abroad programs, and other academic experiences provided by the Honors College and larger university.
  6. Make referrals to other resources when appropriate.
  7. Liaise with specific schools and academic departments to keep current on changes to curricula, policies, and/or procedures.
  8. Inform you about your responsibilities in the advising process and your education in general. Utilize proper communication etiquette when addressing you over email, phone, and in-person; and provide constructive feedback to you, when necessary, to develop your communication etiquette and professionalism.
  9. Uphold privacy of your academic records in accordance with university policy.

Student (Advisee) Responsibilities

As an Honors College student, your role in the advising relationship is to:

  1. Meet and consult with your Honors College adviser at least twice a semester to check progress toward Honors College requirements, discuss courses, ask questions, review transcript, and discuss the suitability of other educational opportunities.
  2. Take responsibility for meeting with specific school/departmental advisers to acquire the information needed for major/minor course scheduling, program planning, and the successful completion of all graduation requirements.
  3. Seek out the academic and career information needed to meet educational goals.
  4. Be responsible for learning and upholding the policies, procedures, and rules of the Honors College, relevant academic program(s) and school, as well as the university.
  5. Be prepared with accurate information and relevant materials when contacting your advisers; utilize proper communication etiquette when addressing advisers and other university officials over email, phone, and in-person.
  6. Assume final responsibility for course scheduling, program planning, and successful completion of all graduation requirements.
  7. Assume responsibility for your academic records in accordance with university policy.
