Mentoring Pod Program Student Team

The Honors College Mentoring Pod Program connects groups of 2-5 undergraduate students with full-time doctoral Mentor Fellows and HC upperclassmen in a variety of academic and career fields. The Graduate Mentor Fellows guide their students through exploring professional and academic interests. The Pod Mentor upperclassmen are leaders for their pods, guiding the underclassmen through their academic journey as well as how to make the most of mentorship opportunities. Two to five undergraduates meet with their Graduate Mentor Fellow throughout the Fall semester, beginning and ending the experience with receptions hosted at the Honors College. Pods discuss trends in their academic interest areas, go on site visits/lab tours, talk about careers, and much more! Additionally, the entire cohort of interdisciplinary students selected to participate in the Mentoring Pod program gather to discuss topics related to professionalism and student success.

Underclassmen can apply via our online application below. You are invited to complete the application for consideration in this signature program by Thursday, September 12that 11:59pm.

Pod Mentors

Our academic year-long mentoring pod program links doctoral Mentor Fellows in a variety of academic and career fields with Honors College students based on topical areas of interest. Mentoring pod topical areas vary based on the academic disciplines of Graduate Mentor Fellows.

Groups of four undergraduates of varying class years meet with their Mentor Fellow throughout the year either in-person or virtually, beginning and ending the year with receptions hosted at the Honors College in New Brunswick. The Graduate Mentor Fellows discuss trends in their academic interest areas, host industry site visits or academic lab tours, and offer career guidance.

Pod Mentor Role Description:

Time Commitment: ~4-5 hours per month

Who can apply: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, regardless of whether you have participated in the Mentoring Pod Program previously or not.

Each Pod Mentor will be paired up with a Graduate Mentor Fellow in their interest area after selection. Pod Mentors act as a liaison between the Graduate Mentor Fellow, General Pod Members, and the Executive Leadership Team. Pod Mentors will offer a unique student perspective on program experiences, as well as provide support and guidance to underclassmen General Pod Members through peer mentorship.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Attend all meetings during the 2020-21 academic year (1 per semester)
  • Attend both program-wide receptions (Welcome Reception in September and Celebration Reception in November)
  • Attend and support 4 of the 5 monthly pod meetings in October, November, February, March, and April to directly mentor underclassmen members
  • All Pod Mentors will help program and facilitate two monthly events (e.g. Self Care Night, Networking Skills Workshop)
  • Assist in capturing pod experiences, events, and site visits by taking pictures and sharing program stories with the ELT Coordinator of Design and Marketing
  • Collaborate with Graduate Mentor Fellows to facilitate a positive experience for General Pod Members, and maintain regular and open communication/feedback loop with the Executive Leadership Team to continue to improve the program experience
  • 2-3 returning Pod Mentors (previously “Senior Pod Members”) will be selected by the ELT and Dean Rydel to serve as Senior Pod Mentors, who will act as liaisons between the ELT and the Pod Mentors and will have additional responsibilities.

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors can apply via our online application whether you have participated in the Mentoring Pod Program previously or not. Applications are due Tuesday, February 18th by midnight for returning Pod Mentors, and  Monday, March 16th by midnight for new pod mentors.
